The ordinal 233 could not be located in the dynamic link library SHDOCVW.dll

I'm trying to install some new software (google pack is one example)
from the web and I'm getting the above error message. From googling
around this looks like a "built in" part of internet explorer that
handles html and I have a dll by that name in my \winnt\system32
directory.

I have IE 6 (firefox, and netscape installed on this particular
machine). I do not have IE 7 installed on this machine, yet. I get
the same error no matter which browser I use to download the items I
wish to install. I now managed to get the "GoogleUpdater.exe"
installed onto the system and get the error when trying to run that.

Has anyone seen this error, know what ordinal 233 is supposed to be (I
presume its the number of some function in that DLL), or have other
suggestions?

Try this:
Open a run command and type In:
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll click [OK]
netsh winsock reset click [OK]
Reboot your computer can you access the browser now?

Thanks! I will try it as soon as I get some time to get back to that
problem machine. It's at home and I essentially only use it once or
twice a month, which is how it got out-of-date to begin with.

This appeared to work. It gave a nice friendly popup saying:
DllRegisterServer in Shdocvw.dll succeeded.

netsh winsock reset click [OK]

This maybe did not with the message (I can't tell, since it says both
good and bad things):

WARNING: Could not obtain host information from machine: [HDXPL1030]. Some
commands may not be available.
The network location cannot be reached. For information about troubleshooting.
see Windows help.

Successfully reset the Winsock Catalog.
You must now restart the machine in order to complete the reset.

Reboot your computer can you access the browser now?

I can access the browser fine. I brought up both firefox (firs, and
closed itt) and he IE 6 (and let IE 6 make itself the default
browser). In IE 6, I was able to bring up the Google main page, and
left that browser page open, when I tried the next thing....

However, when I clicked the "Google Updater" icon on the desktop,
which is supposed to install some Google desktop tools. I still get
the same popup message:

The ordinal 233 could not be located in the dynamic link library: SHDOCVW.DLL.

Now, I don't know if that's because the winsock reset failed (above)
or something else.

It was helpful (may not have solved my problem, but atleast it gave me
something to try). I'm still not able to do the task I started out to
do, i.e. get the Google desktop tools installed on my system and I'd
like more help and ideas if anyone has them.

Is there a newsgroup that specifically addresses Google installation
questions (or some other place I should be inquiring) that I'm unaware
of?

But, again, thanks, I do appreciate your efforts. It was far more
than I knew to do on my own.

Hi Chris,
Okay, first try to Remove google and Run Disk Clean Up on your computer,
then download these software and update their definitions then run a scan:
For Malwares download both these software:
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
http://www.safer-networking.org ; for Spybot S&D
Run Defrag in safe Mode, then start in Normal Mode and open a run command to
register these DLLs or you can copy and paste in your Notepad and save the
File As reg.bat on your Desktop and then open the run command and type in:
reg.bat and click [OK] to execute the reg file.

regsvr32 shell32.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll

Reboot your computer and try to install the software, does it work?.
If not then run this command:
sfc /scannow click [OK] and let it run.
