Oh thought I would tell you guys about the fun I had with an old Abit KT7 mobo last week

It was constantly playing up being unstable. Wouldnt allow O/S installation and kicking off about hardware. I Did a test with a professional probe over 24 hours even that didnt come up with anything.

So on examining the board closer I noticed 6 out of the 7 Capacitors had burst and leaked slighty on the board causing voltage smoothing problems on the CPU.

ARRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

Oh dear, it wasnt even my board LMAO

I took the plunge and ordered new caps for it and over 3 days (thats how long it took me to get the caps and solder out) I gradually replaced them all and reinstalled XP. Low and Behold a beautifully stable system again

Aint I clever?

I wish I had taken some photos now but I forgot DOH!

Which is why I keep all dead motherboards, just to whip out the capacitors when needed... ;)

You do need to know what you're doing though.

(even though three days is above and beyond the call of duty ;) )

LOL it wasnt a solid three days. TBH I started getting a little frustrated about the whole thing so went back to it now and then.

Anyway it all went well I guess and I got a nice shiny 5month old Sony Ericsson W850i with a 1GB card out of it aswell ;)
