The Disk-Cleanup Program doesn't work anymore.

When I try to run Disk Cleanup on my hard drive, it gets
stuck on the first window in which it says it is scanning
the hard disk to see how much space it can clean up.

The instructions say that the scan will take a few
minutes, but I have run the scan as long as 12 hours with
no change.

I have a 40 gbyte hard disk. The computer is 1.5
ghertz. Perhaps, though the disk is too large for the
program.

Is there a way to fix it? Or should I buy a Disk Cleanup
program, such as the Norton software.

Hey,

I wrote this for antoher post so I apologize if it
doesn't relate to you entirely. I was one of the first
people to have this problem about a year ago. Far back in
the newsgroups are all the posts about this problem.
Microsoft has a support page that has directions on how
to fix this, but you won't be able to compress old files
anymore. Here is that link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;812248. I'm sure almost no one uses it, but in case
you want to fix it without getting rid of that function
I'll explain how. The reason that it freezes there is
because your compress old files registry key can just get
messed up. You can download this registry key at this
website, http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm on
line #48. (Another good thing about when everyone else
had this problem was you could put small attachments in
posts which microsoft took away.) Back up ur registry
then import the key. Everything should work.

Good Luck
