The dangers of experiment

Geoff

I added a hyperlink into a Word document to a database of
mine. It worked fine, but on closing the database, a
request for a password flashed up. I cancelled it, and
thought nothing of it, but now when I try to open my
database normally, it asks for a password, which I do not
know!

I can still open the database through the Word hyperlink,
and when I click "Tools>Security>Unset Database Password"
(trust me, there wasn't one set before), it gives me the
following error message.

"You need to have the database open for exclusive use to
set or unset the database password." No-one else is in
the database. When I exit the database, it keeps flashing
the request for a password.

Any ideas for fixing my database?
Thanks,
Geoff.

The message "exclusive" has less to do with your specific database as a
general selection. Open a new 'blank" Access database, or an existing one
that has no password issues. Close it, but leave Access running. Go to FILE,
select OPEN, then open an un-passworded database, it doesn't matter what it
is. Then select TOOLS, then OPTIONS, then the GENERAL tab. On the right, look
for Exclusive and Shared. Click exclusive. Close it all, then try accessing
your troublesome database. Remember, you MUST use the File/Open you cannot
click an icon, etc. Good luck.

If you're using Access 2002, see this KnowledgeBase article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;322860
Database password prompt appears after you open a database by using
a hyperlink or by using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) code in
Access 2002

If you're using Access 2000, there's a link on that page to a
corresponding article for your version of Access.
