the concept of Shared Folders

Hello,

I am a little new at networking, perhaps someone can clarify "shared
documents" to me ...?

I network 3 computers at home thru a DLink router, which in turn is
connected to broadband ADSL. All the drives on my home computers are
"shared" so that they can be managed back and forth thru the network, with
no restrictions.

I recently got a laptop and have been using it at wireless cafe's. A friend
advised me NOT to allow any shares on my laptop, because, theoretically,
they would be accessible to anyone else plugged into the same network at the
wireless cafe.

Fair enough.

But that brings me back to my home computers and my concerns about security
for them. Even tho' I am behind a router and run a sofware firewall (kerio)
on each, all the drives on these computers are on "shared" status (little
hand icon holding them).

Does this in any way compromise my home system or will the router/kerio
combination take care of this?

Thanks for any guidelines or corrections on this...

A lot depends on how your firewall is configured. I've seen people
configure them so that they are useless. I certainly wouldn't share the
entire hadrdrive. Share only the folders that need to be shared. Encryption
is another option, but make sure you understand how to export the key
since it's required to access the files. If it's lost so are the files.

also check the permissions on the folders and remove the Everyone user and
only allow access to specific users
