After I replied to a question in another discussion group the area where the
questions should be is blank. The rest of the page is there and functional.
This is one of the few groups that I can still see the questions. What is
going on and how do I correct it.

You would have to ask MS or use a newsreader. No one here uses the Web
interface to access newsgroups.

There are plenty, but I use Eternal September and all the 'removed'
newsgroups are available.

Eternal September

See http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/default.mspx

IE General, OE General, OE6, Windows Update, Win98 General, & WLMessenger
were some of the newsgroups dropped late last week.

Here's Google Groups archive of what might have been your thread in Windows
Update newsgroup:

With the demise of Windows Update newsgroup, you will find continuing

I was happy to see that it was you that resonded to this question. You were
the one to whom I was sending the other reply too when it went blank. I was
having problems with Outloook Express 6, and you were correct the computer
did come with Norton installed and I upgraded to a better version and after a
few years it quit updating. I contacted Norton tech support and yes we ran a
removal tool. It wasn't long after that, that I started having problems with
my email. I know you respond to a lot of question I am hoping you half way
remember mine.

My question I was repling to you about had to do with one of the steps you
said I needed to do, you had given me a list of things to do. I folllowed
everything you said to do and went to the links you provided. (I wish I had
the reply in front of me so I could get the wording correct). On step 4 you
said I needed to go to (I think you called it) Microsoft Explorer? There I
was to find the address where all emails are stored and delete the files
outbox. dbx, sent items dbx, and deleted items dbx. I was not sure where you
were talking about so with so help from the Help section I figured out to go
to My Computer and right click and go to Explorer. There I scrolled down till
I found the address that I was looking for. There were some 21 files there
and I looked in everyone of them and didn't find anything outbox. dbx (ect).
Either I am not in the right spot or something. Yes I followed the links
about how to find the adress and show hidden files. I am hoping you remember
me and my question. If not I will gladly retype the original question, it was
sent sometime around July 4th. I'm running XP sp3 all updated, Outlook
Express 6, Internet Explore 8. All of your help in this matter has been and
is GREATLY APPRECIATED. Thank You so much. Jeff

Dear PA Bear: I found the Q&A and figured out how to delete the dbx files you
talked about. Thanks. My email still is not working properly. I can not
create,or reply to emails.(Meaning the program does the function but it is
never received at the email address). But strangely enough I can forward an
email, but only if it is 550 kb or larger. Anything smaller and it doesn't
send it, but it does show it in the sent folder. I am still receiving emails
just fine. Since my last post I have also contacted Nortons tech support and
problem is not with the Norton product. I have also tried deleting the dbx
files again, then deleting the recycle bin, and then restarting the computer.
My ISP has been very helpful and it is not on their end either. I am hoping
that you have another idea of what the problem might be. I am very thankful
for all of your help. Jeff

...Anything smaller and it doesn't
send it, but it does show it in the sent folder

Again, if a copy of the message appears in Sent Items folder, the message
was sent and the problem lies somewhere outside of Outlook Express. That
being said...

If you completed all four (4) steps in my post in Windows Update newsgroup
dated 25 June
(http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsupdate/msg/eadcc3e5f2a6c560)
AND you've disabled email scanning by NAV and yet the behavior persists,
your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default "Main
Identity." Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity...

File | Identities | Add new identity

Assuming all is well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2)
import messages from the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete
the old one (File | Identities | Manage Identities).

Then again...
...the computer
did come with Norton installed and I upgraded to a better version and
after a few years it quit updating.

You may be seeing the effects of a hijackware infection. Has your Norton
subscription ever expired since you've owned the computer?

I have tried what you said and it is still not working. It will still forward
if the message is 550 kb or larger. No I don't ever remember letting Norton
expire. Do I need to go back and delete the dbx files again? If you think the
problem is outside of OE, then what should I try next?

If the behavior persists in a new identity, I suspect you're seeing the
effects of a hijackware infection, Jeff.

Had the free-trial period for the preinstalled Norton application already
expired by the time you purchased your first subscription?

Has your Norton subscription ever expired since you've owned the computer?

How long had you been running the "better version" when it "quit updating?"

What's the full name & version of the currently-install Norton application
(e.g., Norton 360 2009; Norton AntiVirus 2010; Norton Security Suite)?

Can you run (Norton) LiveUpdate manually & successfully?

Dear PA Bear: First let me say Thank You, for all of your time and help on
this. Here is the info on the computer and Norton. The bios says the computer
was built in 2004. I bought it new in the spring of 2005, and it came with a
trial version (90 day) of Norton Internet Security (2004) installed on it.
Before it ended I purchased a subscription. At renewal time in 2006, I had
the option to upgrade to a better version. It was Norton System Works Basic
Edition (2006), and it worked fine until the summer of 2009. Then when I
would try and update it started saying no updates available. (Because of my
internet speed I have always updated manually). This went on for a couple of
weeks, as you can tell I am not on the computer everyday. So I contacted
Norton tech support and thats when we (they) ran the Removal Tool, and
installed Norton 360 (? version). It was a short time after this (a month
maybe longer) that I noticed that some of the emails I would send (forwarded)
would not get received. Lets say if I forwarded 10 emails to 8 people one
person might not get one of them. The next time everyone would get them, then
the next time a different person might not get one. It was random and I
didn't know it was happening for awhile, until I would ask someone what they
thought about something I had sent them and they would tell me that they
didn't receive it. Over the next 4 or 5 months it got worse, until most
things I forwarded didn't go through. I asked otheir people I knew that have
the same ISP and no one else had any trouble. So I called my ISP they checked
some things and said it was not them. Then my Reply stopped going through
(about 2 months later). I call my ISP again. I could use Create New Mail and
this worked for a while and then it stopped working. This brings us up to
late spring of this year. I have tried Microsofts "An Outlook basic repair
kit", then I went to the Newsgroups, Microsoft Answers, the fourms, but
nothing really fit my problem. That's when I did a partail recovery. My
email worked like it should, until I finished the Microsoft updates and, or
when I reinstalled Norton 360 (4.0 the latest version). It took a few days to
do this, my internet speed tops out at 500 kbs (that is between 1 am and 7
am) and slows to a crawl (it can get below 30 kbs and stay there for hours)
when a lot pepole get on it. (Welcome to small town America). Sorry I had to
vent for a second. I called my ISP again they checked their end again. Then I
turned off Norton and nothing. I ran the Norton removal tool still nothing.
Then I reinstalled Norton. That is when I started talking to you and trying
what you have said. Then on July 31, 2010. I contacted Norton tech support
and they checked, and said it is not there product causing the problem.
Norton has been set to automatic renewal since 2005, so no I have never let
it expire. If you had any idea of how many hours I have put in on research
and trying things to fix this problem, you would say I was crazy. INFO: Win
XP home (version) SP3 (all updates), Internet Explore 8, Outlook Express 6,
Adobe reader and video player (latest versions up to date). I have always
kept all my programs up to date. If it makes any difference it is an HP
computer, Pentium 4. About Norton updating it works fine, the scans are
finding nothing but a few cookies. I am sorry this is so long, but I figured
the more info the better. I would say I was frustrated, but I don't think
that word covers it anymore. Again Thank You.

...It was a
short time after this (a month maybe longer) that I noticed that some of
the emails I would send (forwarded) would not get received.

There's a BIG difference between (some of) your correspondents not receiving
an email you'd sent and the email "getting stuck" in the Outbox (folder).
Or did I misunderstand your earlier posts?
...That's when I did a [partial] recovery.

Oh? That's a new wrinkle you'd not told us about before. Did you do a
Repair Install of WinXP or...?

Had IE7 and/or IE8 been installed when you did this "partial recovery?"

Hello: Okay we do have a couple of misunderstandings. (First one.) Nothing
ever gets stuck in the Outbox folder, it is empty. There is a folder labled
Sent Items. Whether or not it is received it shows up in the Sent Item
folder, as if it really was sent or at least the computer thinks so. (Second
one.) I realize that you help a lot of people, and I am thankful. I mean the
following respectively. Maybe you misread, forgot or misunderstood something
I wrote. I went back and checked my orginal post and the partail recovery was
listed. "I did a partial recovery (June 2010)". I am going to have to say no
to the question. "Did you do a Repair Install of WinXP or...?". The best I
remember I just followed what ever instuctions came up on the screen, and I
don't remember if it told me too or if when it said it was finished that I
went to Microsoft update page and got the updates. I do beleive that IE 8 was
already installed before the partial recovery. If it came out in the early
part of 2010 then yes it was installed. Thanks. Jeff

I think the "partial recovery" was, in fact, a Repair Install (unless you're
referring to having used a Restore Point).

If such was the case and you did not uninstall IE8 (and IE7) before doing
the "partical recovery," your only recourse (as far as your WinXP computer,
IE & OE are concerned) now will be a clean install. See...

nor do I have any trouble with Internet Explore now. It is and has been
working just fine. The only complaint I have about the internet is my speed
and that is controlled by my ISP and their physical limits. About the restore
points. I could not get the computer to restore to any date before I did the
partial recovery. That is why I finally decided to do the partail recovery.

Thanks for your help.

See...

How to perform a repair installation of Windows XP if a later version of

Hello: Okay we do have a couple of misunderstandings. (First one.) Nothing
ever gets stuck in the Outbox folder, it is empty. There is a folder
labled
Sent Items. Whether or not it is received it shows up in the Sent Item
folder, as if it really was sent or at least the computer thinks so.
(Second
one.) I realize that you help a lot of people, and I am thankful. I mean
the
following respectively. Maybe you misread, forgot or misunderstood
something
I wrote. I went back and checked my orginal post and the partail recovery
was listed. "I did a partial recovery (June 2010)". I am going to have to
say no to the question. "Did you do a Repair Install of WinXP or...?". The
best I remember I just followed what ever instuctions came up on the
screen, and I don't remember if it told me too or if when it said it was
finished that I went to Microsoft update page and got the updates. I do
beleive that IE 8 was already installed before the partial recovery. If it
came out in the early part of 2010 then yes it was installed. Thanks. Jeff
...It was a
short time after this (a month maybe longer) that I noticed that some
of
the emails I would send (forwarded) would not get received.

There's a BIG difference between (some of) your correspondents not
receiving an email you'd sent and the email "getting stuck" in the Outbox
(folder).

Jeff wrote:
Dear PA Bear: First let me say Thank You, for all of your time and help
on
this. Here is the info on the computer and Norton. The bios says the
computer was built in 2004. I bought it new in the spring of 2005, and
it
came with a trial version (90 day) of Norton Internet Security (2004)
installed on it. Before it ended I purchased a subscription. At renewal
time in 2006, I had the option to upgrade to a better version. It was
Norton System Works Basic Edition (2006), and it worked fine until the
summer of 2009. Then when I would try and update it started saying no
updates available. (Because of my internet speed I have always updated
manually). This went on for a couple of weeks, as you can tell I am not
on
the computer everyday. So I contacted Norton tech support and thats when
we
(they) ran the Removal Tool, and installed Norton 360 (? version). It
was
a
short time after this (a month maybe longer) that I noticed that some
of
the emails I would send (forwarded) would not get received. Lets say if
I
forwarded 10 emails to 8 people one person might not get one of them.
The
next time everyone would get them, then the next time a different person
might not get one. It was random and I didn't know it was happening for
awhile, until I would ask someone what they thought about something I
had
sent them and they would tell me that they didn't receive it. Over the
next
4 or 5 months it got worse, until most things I forwarded didn't go
through. I asked otheir people I knew that have the same ISP and no one
else had any trouble. So I called my ISP they checked some things and
said
it was not them. Then my Reply stopped going through (about 2 months
later). I call my ISP again. I could use Create New Mail and this worked
for a while and then it stopped working. This brings us up to late
spring
of this year. I have tried Microsofts "An Outlook basic repair kit",
then
I
went to the Newsgroups, Microsoft Answers, the fourms, but nothing
really
fit my problem. That's when I did a partail recovery. My email worked
like
it should, until I finished the Microsoft updates and, or when I
reinstalled Norton 360 (4.0 the latest version). It took a few days to
do
this, my internet speed tops out at 500 kbs (that is between 1 am and 7
am)
and slows to a crawl (it can get below 30 kbs and stay there for hours)
when a lot pepole get on it. (Welcome to small town America). Sorry I
had
to vent for a second. I called my ISP again they checked their end
again.
Then I turned off Norton and nothing. I ran the Norton removal tool
still
nothing. Then I reinstalled Norton. That is when I started talking to
you
and trying what you have said. Then on July 31, 2010. I contacted Norton
tech support and they checked, and said it is not there product causing
the
problem. Norton has been set to automatic renewal since 2005, so no I
have
never let it expire. If you had any idea of how many hours I have put in
on
research and trying things to fix this problem, you would say I was
crazy.
INFO: Win XP home (version) SP3 (all updates), Internet Explore 8,
Outlook
Express 6, Adobe reader and video player (latest versions up to date). I
have always kept all my programs up to date. If it makes any difference
it
is an HP computer, Pentium 4. About Norton updating it works fine, the
scans are finding nothing but a few cookies. I am sorry this is so long,
but I figured the more info the better. I would say I was frustrated,
but
I
don't think that word covers it anymore. Again Thank You.

If the behavior persists in a new identity, I suspect you're seeing the
effects of a hijackware infection, Jeff.

...the computer
did come with Norton installed and I upgraded to a better version and
after a few years it quit updating. I contacted Norton tech support
and
yes we ran a removal tool. It wasn't long after that, that I started
having
problems with my email.

Had the free-trial period for the preinstalled Norton application
already
expired by the time you purchased your first subscription?

Has your Norton subscription ever expired since you've owned the
computer?

How long had you been running the "better version" when it "quit
updating?"

What's the full name & version of the currently-install Norton
application
(e.g., Norton 360 2009; Norton AntiVirus 2010; Norton Security Suite)?

Can you run (Norton) LiveUpdate manually & successfully?
