That "control user passwords2" fix.

Gordie

Hello all,
The "control user passwords2" for those persons having trouble with their
logon, (because of the presence of the "ASP.Net machine account"), is often
suggested as a solution to tthis problem.
From what I have seen here, that fix does work, HOWEVER, if the .NET 1.1
Framework has been installed, applying the Service Pack for the Framework,
i.e SP1 for .NET 1.1, also solves the problem as the logon issue was
addressed in SP1 for .NET 1.1.

A quick look at TweakUI | Logon , will show a checkbox option ' Show
"ASPNET" on welcome screen' once the Service Pack (SP1 for .NET 1.1) has
been applied.
Since newer programs will require the .NET Framework ( it is, even now,
almost a standard feature of XP anyway!), I think persons wishing to modify
their logon, should FIRST be encouraged to apply the update if they already
have .NET and if not, to download and install .NET 1.1 and then get the SP1
update!
If they are having problems doing this, or for whatever reason do not want
to install the framework, then the "control user passwords2" workaround
could be used as a last resort.

Once again: As far as I can see, Logon issues, (eg. "I am the only user and
I would like to boot straight to the desktop"), relating to .NET 1.1/
ASP.NET machine account have been addressed in Service Pack 1 for .NET 1.1.

For those wishing to get .NET 1.1;.... (go ahead, it's a good idea now, but
it is going to be necessary later!)

If you also notice, the only users who are bothered from this, are the one's
who Auto-Logon. That said, the fix is still appropriate. No one who offers
the CUSP2 workaround has suggested not installing NF or any updates for it.

This was my main reason for providing the example as I did, to make the post
more specific to that particular group.

No one who offers
the CUSP2 workaround has suggested not installing NF or any updates for
it.

Of course not and nobody would expect that suggestion either, (certainly not
from anyone even remotely affiliated with Microsoft!).... but why not kill
two birds with one stone?
On applying .NET/SP1,
(a) the autologon problem is resolved, and
(b) the user has a more fully updated machine!

Hi Gordie,

Thanks for the reply. As for:

(b) the user has a more fully updated machine!

Was thinking of the one dated 8/2003 for 1.0. My bad. Will begin posting
this tonight to see how it turns out.)
