Thanks to those who responded to my messages regarding an upgrade on an old
P3 500 Mhz machine from WinME to XP.
The upgrade was successful, but not completely uneventful!! Those
contemplating the same thing may be interest in what follows:
The upgrade stalled at a couple of points, and I thought it would not
succeed. But finally, after erasing all software that XP seemed to dislike,
based on the report it generated, and then following MSFT's tip to do a
clean reboot of WinME (using msconfig to turn EVERYTHING off except for one
item they specifically request) the upgrade succeeded.
It was very very lengthy - I left the system running overnight during the
phase in which it seem to collect data and load its own software (about 7
hours) and then it took four or five hours more to actual get the system up
and running. Partly due, no doubt, to the slow old processor and slow
CD-ROM, possibly since it (hopefully) strips away the detritus of a Win98 -
WinME upgrade before this.
The only unexpected problem was with Norton Internet Security and Virus
Protect - I had to uninstall them and reinstall them. A few tweaks here and
there - e.g. to load WinXP drivers for my printer) and I was in business
So far, everything seems to be working fine!
