is there something like a textwidth method that can be used on form to
determine actual width of text in a recordset field. i need to resize
grid columns on the fly.

Assuming you're using a non-proportional font, it's non trivial. See what
Stephen Lebans has at http://www.lebans.com/textwidth-height.htm

For proportional fonts, all you need to do is use the Len function.
