I need something to record voice. Not just simple File / Open type commands
or even me dictating a letter. I'm looking for something that'll record
conversations and type up english text into Word or some other text editor.
Is there any way to do this in XP or 2000? Or some program I could buy?

Duh - I meant the subect to be Speech to Text, not the other way around

There are a number of programs to do speech input, and OfficeXP has speech
input capability built in. BUT: these do not usually work very well until
after they have been "trained" for a specific voice. Trying to record a
conversation with more than one voice (especially if a voice has not been
trained for) does not usually work very well at all.
It also is very important to have a good microphone - a headset one where the
microphone is kept at a fixed distance from the speaker works best.

This is why schools that teach Stenography are still in business - the
machines haven't caught up (yet).

www.scansoft.com

Having now bought IBM Via Voice, Scansoft is the current leader in speach
recognition. Have your wallet handy. If you want recognition of normal
conversation, as opposed to deliberate dictation, you will probably need the
top of the line "pro" version or what have you and even then, you might not
be too happy with the error rate.
