I'm creating a document which will have several sections. For example the Title may be 8.1.
Down the left hand side will be
8.1.
8.1.
8.1.

When I change the title to 8.2.1 is it possible that the middle number can automatically change on the left hand side?

automatically change on the left hand side??Yes... Assuming you've set up the numbering correctly. Basically, this would be
controlled in Format/Bullets and Numbering/Customize. You'd set the first level to start
at "8" and the second to start at "2"; the third level needs to be set to pick up the
numbering from the above levels. All the headings you type into the document (as shown in
your example) would have to be formatted as the third level.
