After reinstalling WinXp Pro SP2 I notice a distinct deterioration of text
displayed either on Notepad, e-mail messages or other docs. The text,
though still readable, appears to be of a 'lesser quality' and looks more
like a copy of a copy of a copy...

Are there any suggestions as how to improve the quality of text?

Have you tried the clear type powertoy?
http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypePowerToy.mspx

Right click on the Desktop and go to Properties | Settings | Advanced and
play with the dpi settings and see if that helps.

Right click Desktop > Properties > Appearance tab
Click Effects > Tick "Use the following method to Smooth screen.."
Click OK twice

Good Luck, Ayush.

Good Luck, Ayush.
Thanks to everybody responding to my request.

Ayush's suggestion worked spot-on.
Under "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts", in the
drop-down box, I selected 'ClearType' which fixed up the quality issue in a
flash.

Thank you very much, Ayush.
