How do I " overlay " text on pictures ?
I have pictures in jpg, and I have poems also in jpg.
I'd like to create a ppt with each slide consisting of a poem over a
picture.
Thank you.

No, it does not work. I cannot have the writings overlaid on top of the
picture.

Ok. I did not explain clearly.
I can insert the picture.
I can, under Insert tab, click Text Box, and make a vertical or horizontal
box over the picture, and I can type the text within the box. But that is
not what I need to do.
My poems are in Chinese, and they are individually saved in jpg format. I
need to transfer ( copy/paste ) a poem on top of a picture. That's my
problem.

Yes, they all have a light green background. It will take some doing, but I
can turn them into white background.

Clicking the picture transparency tool on the green might help (but only if
the green is truly one color)

Picture Tools Tab > recolor picture > set tranparent color tool

If you are producing the jpegs yourself use a png instead with a transparent
background

Yes, my keyboard cannot type Chinese. I have an online Chinese Input Method
from which I compose in Chinese, but the textbox will not accept copy/paste.

Sorry, but you have yet to tell me how to transfer a poem over a picture.
And, when do I use the Picture Tools tab > recolour picture > set
transparent colour tool.

When you copy/paste from your online Chinese Input Method, do you get an
image with your text in it or do you get your text? Basically, once the text
comes in PowerPoint, are you able to select part of the text or are you able
to select the whole shape only and nothing within it?

中文字 = Chinese word.
That's an example of copy & paste.
I can select part or whole of the Chinese text by means of copy/paste.
I do not understand your reference of " within it ".

I have found the solution................
Insert my pictures.
Select a poem from my Poems folder, right click > copy.
Back to my ppt, click on the picture I want to insert my poem.
Clipboard tab, click Paste, click paste on drop-down box.
That's it.
A lot more work than anticipated, but until someone comes along with a high
tech method .......
