When I put text on a .jpeg image that I had inserted into
a web page on Front page,a dialog box appeared to tell me
that it would convert my image to a .gif. When I uploaded
the web page and image to my host server all I got was the
dreaded small red cross. The size of the image had also
doubled. What am I doing wrong!

You need to add your text to your image, in a image editing application, then you can save the image
as JPG or GIF and adjust the overall file size and image quality

Your best bet is to always use a graphics program to edit images. FP isn't
really good at doing things like this at all. You can add text to an image
in a third-party image editor (should be plenty of freeware/shareware ones
at www.tucows.com) and then save the file and use the File | Import FP
feature to import the image into your web. Make sure that you are editing
your pages as part of a web and not just creating one individually. FP uses
webs to keep track of all the files and images and can loose them if you
aren't creating pages as part of a web.

Hope this helps,

The free IrfanView www.irfanview.com will place text in an image.
