text doesn't appear in message until recipient replies or forwards message

One of our users copied and pasted text from a website into a new Outlook 2003 message and sent it to a couple contacts. The text looked fine when she sent the message, but didn't appear in the message received by the recipients. However, when the recipient replied to the message, the text appeared in the reply. Any ideas why Outlook would behave like this?

what mail server are you using and what format was the message - html, plain
text or RTF?
