text direction is faint how do I get into it

under format the text direction is faint , what can I do to be able to click
on it
 
You can only change direction of text which is contained in a Text Box or
other AutoShape (perhaps Frames also, but I don't use them much). Regular
text in a Word doc can be horizontal only.

Text Direction is available in text boxes, tables, and frames.
