Hi there

I know that XP used to come with an application that would allow you to
capture text from an image - I know this because I used it at work about 5
years ago. However I can't find it now - anyone know what it's called and
where I can find it?

Thanks

Charlie

Hi Charlie,
Certain peripherals like scanners introduce word-recognition
programs to your computer but XP does not have one by default. I recommend
that you do a google on this searching for "word-recognition free download"

That's called Optical Character Recognition (OCR) but to my knowledge at
least, XP has never had that ability natively. You would have either
had a 3rd part app, or one was provided with the bundled software
package for the computer.

Yes, more accurately OCR, I forgot that is what it's properly called. It
has been so long since I had the computer with the scanner attached, which
was the one with the 'word capture' software on it. So the google search
you should do would be: "OCR programs free download" - good luck

Office includes OCR called Microsoft Office Document Scanning. Under
Microsoft Office Tools on Start.

Thanks, I didn't know that (obviously) I've just taken a look and it works
well.

Its basic in a lot of ways, but I had 3 pages to scan and it worked
well. For free (or tagged with the $100's of $ for office free).

Do you mean something like a web page, a PDF file, something somebody
sent you, a picture, a picture on a WWW page, or do you have something
you need to scan and then pull text off the scan?

I guess you need to help me understand what "image" means to you and
how you came across this image. If it is a WWW page, give an example
of the WWW page and what text you want to capture from the page.
