Text box does not hide

I am using Powerpoint 2000 SP3

I have created a slide with two text boxes and set the animation on the
first to hide on the next mouse click,
but it is not doing it, the second text box just appears over the top and
both are visible.
Is there something I am missing?
Is there a way to fix this?

Did you change your effect to "no effect" by mistake? If yes, change it to appear. If no, ??? I'm stumped.
 
No I checked and it is definitley selected as
hide on the next mouse click,
