testdisk and findpart problem

J

jcombalicer

I have a 120GB seagate harddrive and suddenly one evening it just went
bad, when i tried to boot i encountered a stop sign telling me that i
missing file, i've tried repairing winxp pro, but it says that
bad_pool_area, i try to chkdsk with my other 40GB harddrive using the
same system, and try to boot the problem drive again, and tell me
again that i have a missing file so i tried to repair again using the
bootdisk of winxp pro but i says that i now have a bad_pool_caller not
bad_pool_area unlike before, my whole system is ok except for my OS.

The other drive (40GB) with separate Winxp Pro works fine with my
system but the other drive (120GB) suddenly appear showing problem,
though i can view the content of my drive but i cant boot from it, and
while restarting my other partition was lost, so tried using testdisk
and findpart, but while using testdisk and searching deepr i found my
lost partition but it was indicated as deleted and when i try to write
it, it cannot be written what will i do.

Findpart is so confusing..........

Thank you! for any help.....

Problems visible here are:

The ID of the FAT32 partition at cylinder 14508 is wrong, it should be
0B and not 0C.

The same partition does not contain a jump instruction in the first
bytes of the boot sector, which prevents various Windows versions from
seeing the partition,

Yup, TestDisk is so much easier. Reads like a dream.

To keep the work within what you can expect, you can do this:

Copy the files from the 101 MB partition using the command (assuming
the problem disk is disk 2), by doing in an empty directory:

findpart chsdir 2 14508 1 1 copy

Then verify that the files were copied correct.

Then you have to find a reliable partitioning tool, and delete and
recreate the 101 MB partition. You may be able to use XP Disk
Management for that.

This should solve the problems visible in the Findpart output.

the problem is i dont have any free space left where i can transfer my
file. Prior to that, before my partition was lost, im using acronis
partition expert, everything works well with that program, its been a
month ago since i last repartition my hard disk using that program,
but my problem appeared just recently, im just doing the normal
chores, when im about to restart that is when the problem started, i
cannot boot to xp, does the acronis partition expert use different
kind of method that is why the testdisk or the findpart cannot recover
my partition and show it as deleted partition, but testdisk say that
my birmingham partition says that the backup boot sector is found at
the last sector? but cannot write it.....

thank you to anyone who read this and thank you more to anyone who can
help me with this....

thank you to all who reply to my post!

thank you sven your so nice!

It is difficult to understand that you cannot find room for the files
from a 101 MB partition in another partition, when you have a 38162 MB
disk and a 114471 MB disk. I cannot suggest other solutions, since it
will be too much to manually edit partition tables and boot sector in
case.

The tool used to create the partitions shown by Findpart cannot create
reliable partition tables.

The partition you should copy data from using Findpart, and delete
after you verified the copied data are OK, using a reliable
partitioning tool, is a 101 MB partition. If you have 5 GB free space,
101 MB is less than 5 GB.

Note that the solution I provided is a solution to the problems seen
in the Findpart output.
