Temporary Freezing in XP

I seem to have this annoying problem in Windows XP. Every 10 minutes or so,
no matter what I'm dong in, whether it's email or programs, my system freezes
where I can't move the cursor or click on anything. It only last a few
seconds but it is annoying. I have a Gateway laptop with 1G RAM. This only
recently started occuring. Could this be because of a program I installed?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There's no way for us to know if this could be because of a program you
installed.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time things
worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

If the problems started directly after you installed something, uninstall
the something first and then do a System Restore to before you installed
it.

Look in Event Viewer for clues:
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

Make sure the computer is virus/malware-free:

Or it could be that the computer is overheating or there is some other
hardware problem:

If the troubleshooting procedures look too complex - and there is no shame
in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

You need to find the specific process in that application that's taking all
the CPU resources.

To do this try Process Explorer:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
Click on the CPU column to sort processes by %CPU usage.
Then on the process that using most or all the CPU %, once it highlighted,
right click
and from the options listed select: google
This should display what out there on the web about that process.

Note: some entries like svchost may need to be expanded to show the detail,
in this case click on the + located to the left on the entry.

Yes. Use msconfig to find out what app is the problem.
