Temporary files

After installing Office 2003, every file I open is copied in Explorer at least twice - one looks something like this: "~$Miscellaneous.doc" and one "~WRL0001.tmp", both are greyed-out, both copies of the same active file. How can I get rid of them? I use Word 2002.

Thanks in advance, Marli

They're meant to be there. They get deleted by Word when it closes.

This is normal. These are temporary working files created by Word. You
obviously have 'all files' selected as the file type in the 'File open'
dialog. The files should be deleted when you close the document and/or Word.

As I mentioned in a separate post a minute ago, my 22 ".tmp" files
defy deletion and have survived many document and Word closures.

They're as seemingly indestructible as Frankenstein, and yet......

Reboot, which should free them, then delete.

Thanks, everyone. I haven't had them before and am not impressed. I'm experiencing other problems with the new office which I shall ask about and am beginning to wish I'd never got it. But am very impressed with these support columns!

You *have* had them before, but you may not have seen them. In Word's File
Open dialog, they are not displayed unless you have "Files of type" set to
"All Files." In Windows Explorer, I believe you won't see them unless you
have hidden files and folders displayed (recommended).
