Templates

I have placed templates within the alternate start up location but they
cannot be opened as templates. Within the same location I have Sheet and Book
templates which are being picked up as the default on opening Excel.
The alternate startup location is on the server.
Excel help says this should work but at one point it also says that
templates can only be opened unless they are stored in the standard default
templates folder!

Seem to have solved my own problem by creating a shortcut to the templates
folder on the server and putting this in the defalut location for each
machine on the C Drive.
Not quite as straightforward as setting up an alternate start up folder but
it does seem to work.

It sounds like you want to set up a templates for your workgroup:

MSOffice has a Workgroup templates location that excel can use--but excel can't
change.

If you open MSWord, you can do:
tools|options|file locations
and set that workgroup templates location to the network path you want.

You can also get to this if you use the MSOffice shortcut bar
