template issue

Is it possible to protect the template i apply to a doc? i do not want my
styles to change whenever i close and open my documents. can i restrict word
from changing the styles?

To prevent a template from updating the document, clear the "Automatically
update document styles" option in Tools | Templates and Add-Ins, or--for
Word 2007--in Developer tab | Document Template) for the affected
document(s).

To prevent a template from being modified, you can make it read-only.

Indeed, you need to "Automatically update document styles" to actually add
the styles of the template to the document (see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/attachtemplate/index.html). To prevent the
styles from updating the format of existing text, apply different styles to
that text.
