Template Form

I am new to creating templates in Word so please bear with me and I could use
some help. I am trying to create a template so that I can maintain a standard
font size, etc. for each text box. For example I want to have fields like
document number, title, etc. and the user can select that text field, enter
the text and the font and all with maintain a certain size.

I would also like placeholder text placed in the field that is grey so that
the user can see it but when they select the field, they can start typing in
their data.

One thing that would be nice is when they bring up the document the user
would be presented with a text box asking for certain pieces of information
and when they click ok, the fields on the document would be populated.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Chris A

Sounds like you want a mix of things. You can create a form that has fields
where information can be entered or you could use macrobuttons. It you want
the user to be presented with dialog boxes when they open the template,
asking for information to populate the document you can use Ask fields and
bookmark references.

Look into macrobutton fields and online forms. See
http://www.addbalance.com/usersguide/fields.htm#MacroButton and
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/UsingMacroButton.htm for more
about macrobutton fields.

For more about online forms, follow the links at
http://addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#Forms or
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm especially Dian
Chapman's series of articles. The later articles in that series get into
custom dialog boxes (userforms) as well. You may also want to look at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/TblsFldsFms/LinesInForms.htm.

Hope this helps,

Hi Chris,

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Userforms/CreateAUserForm.htm to get started.

That article discusses inserting the user's information into the document at
bookmarks. Once you get the hang of that, it would be better to store the
information in "document variables" or "document properties" and then use
DocVariable or DocProperty fields to display their values. When you get to
that point, post back for more help.

Thanks for the info, but it looks like what I am looking for (from doing some
readin), is using the "ASK" function. Do you know where I can get some
information on that? When the user is presented with the word document, they
are ask a few questions that relate to some fields that I already have
defined.

You can find tutorials about the ASK field at
http://addbalance.com/word/download.htm. However, the ASK field is a real
pain if you have multiple pieces of information. An on-line form or user
form is a lot easier to use.
