Temperature reporting Utility needed

I have been using Aida32 and just downloaded the Everest home edition
(both look the same to me) which has a report on the motherboard and the
cpu temperature. The one listed in the Pricelessware list seemed to be
similar to Aida32. There is also one at
http://private.peterlink.ru/tochinov/. There has been mention of such a
utility on this group but at the time I didn't think I had need since
I'm not doing games and multimedia but I am editing large graphics which
I think is creating work effort and hotter drives.

I'm thinking something small and specific that could even sit in the
systray and give a reading while I'm in the middle of something
intensive.

The computer has overheated and immediately QUIT with no warning and the
other day twice in the same day so as well as acting on getting things
cooler in the case I would like a quick way of getting a report. At the
moment I have the side panel off and it is only the two hard drives that
are fairly warm to the touch. Others think my temperatures are a little
high. If a second fan is installed I would still like to keep note of
the temperatures now that I have experienced this unsettling situation.

The author's site (above) doesn't like Zone Alarm -and he says that on
his site-and I got it easily at MajorGeeks

Motherboard Monitor 5 will fit the bill for you. Is nice and can be left in
the system tray.
I use it, even though it has problems with my motherboard (ASUS P4S800D for
Pentium IV), but they can be worked around.

Also SpeedFan is good, and as an added feature can control CPU fans - but
this doesn't always work.

BTW, anybody know where can I find Everest Home Edition v1.5 or earlier?
Version 2.0 seems to have became liteware (removed all info about Windows
and installed softwares)

Look up "speedfan" or "PC Wizard". Either will minimize and show your CPU
temperature on screen or in the tray. PC Wizard is easier to configure,
SpeedFan has more options.

If all you want is the temperature then this program might work. It's
tiny and all it does is tell you the temperature. You can set it for a
specific warning temperature. It doesn't allow you to change the fan
speed or anything else. I used it on xp with zonealarm with no problems.

If all you want is HDD temperature, health status, benchmark, and scan for
bad sectors, I highly recommend HDTune. I rate it above the commercial
programs. It runs from a single EXE file.

The utility at this site, Dtemp, is rather good. The funereal black
of the site might look a bit like a cross between a hacker's lair and
a goth discussion group and the Russian site hosting may caution you
to be very careful but in fact Dtemp is a good utility and it is also
a zillion times lighter on your system than full-blown apps like
Motherboard Monitor or Everest.

It is referred to here by the Silent PC crowd who are forever trying
to lower their fan speeds to get quieter PCs but then need to keep an
eye on HDD temps:
