Temp Files

Many times it is advised to move Temp files to a separate partition. Mainly
to reduce the frangmentation of the root directory. However, (in addition to
temporary Internet files) there are four types of them as follows:

User variables "TMP" "TEMP" files at C:\Documents and Settings\...
System variables "TMP" and "TEMP" files at C:\ Windows\.

Which temp files are usually referred to? Is there an adverse effect if I
move them all
to a jacent partition apart from a small delay in moving the HDD's head
further?

Hi,

I find that most often it is the user variable that is affected, but it's
not exclusive. You can move them all with no ill effects should you wish.

Add: TMP and TEMP are provided as alternate names that should point to
the same place - it is just that some programs use the short form of
the variable name in referring to them

There will still be a few around that obstinately use Windows\Temp,
whatever value you set on the variables, so you need to keep that folder
in existence and check on it occasionally
