tell me how to make a back up disk

can someone please walk me thru how to do a back up disk? my windows is acting funny ie icons wont work the screen flashes and then nothing. i want to do a back up disk in case this gets worse before it gets better. im computer illiterate so step by step would be nice. thank you .
