I don't really know how to explaine it but out of the blue my unit will
start to
ring as if a telephone except the pause between rings is not as long a
normal
land line phone. It starts at any time on any application, perhaps 2/3 time
a week.
I have ran the applicable AV , trojan ect. programs without success.

kidding aside, the little-st can be the hardest to figure out. What I
suggest is that you have your task manager open through out a session. Then
when the pc starts ringing, see which process has taken priority in the cpu
column in the task manager......

You could look through the Program Event sounds
(control panel/sounds and audio devices/Sounds tab) to find
any program/event tied to the ringing.

On my recently reinstalled system, NetMeeting- Recive Call has a phone ring.

Hi antwine,

The answer is simple, if you installed Windows Live Messenger. When
someone wants to start a Voice or Video Conversation with you, it plays a
Ringing sound to get your attention. Anyone who uses Windows Live Messenger
knows this, unless this is a completely new Instant Messenger program for
you and you haven't called anyone on it to speak with them using a
Microphone and your computer speakers.

I do not have net meeting or live messenger installed. This problem arose
last week
and I cannot fathom what I have done to cause it. Regardkess of my sound
volumn setting this phone ringing comes on full blast, lasts about 15 or
twenty
second, then shuts off. The sound does not resemble a typical phone ring,
the space between rings is much shorter, the end of ech ring is not crisp
but
trails of in a semi-roar. I have not DL'd anything that can be traced to
this problem.

This is probably a shot in the dark...but could it be a utility
that might be warning you of an overheated CPU, or some other
system event?
