telephone ring boots up computer

You need to go into your BIOS and look for an option that says "wake on
ring" or wake on lan", or something similar. Disable this feature.

I did this, but the option to turn off "wake up to ring" was not listed under the power management section. The only thing similar was "wake up after power failure".
The ACPI was 'enabled', but I left it enabled since I did not know what that was
Any more suggestions

You did what? Nobody has any idea as you responded without including
what your advisor told you to try. Now everybody has to guess what
you need from groun zero!

I'm out on a limb, but I'm guessing you are trying to fix your problem
by going into XP's power management utility. Your computer waking up
when the phone rings has nothing to do with XP. It's a BIOS level
function that starts up long before XP does.

How do you get into BIOS? Only you can find that out. Different BIOS
manufacturers have different ways to get into BIOS setup. Watch your
computer monitor when you first power up; it usually tells you what
key(s) to press to access "setup" or something similiar. Once there,
search for Wake-On-Ring or something similiar and turn it off. When
you exit BIOS setup, your computer will reboot and voila, you're done!

I wrote that it us /usually/ under the management section. Maybe it's
somewhere else. What I'd do:

1. Look through the other menus also.
2. Go on the motherboard manufacturer's site and look for the FAQs on your
board.
3. On the manf. site, there is often also a forum that you can search, or
ask in a new thread.
4. Use google to search for the problem
(http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search) specifying your board.
5. Contact your mobo manufacturer

Anyway, this is actually not a WinXP problem.

The setting is ok.

If you'd use a working news reader you'd have my answer right above his one.

Here it is again:

I am using a working newsreader - Agent. Don't come down on me
