telephone number formating/formats

I use Outlook 2002. Telephone numbers were automatically formated (123)
456-7890. Now Outlook no longer automatically formats new entries as
displayed above. What may have caused the change and how can I set
parameters/inputs so that I retain standardized appearance/functionality
throughout my Contact database.
