I am stuck with a registry entry (which I delete at least once a day)
which keep coming.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Teknum Systems]
"RefCount"=dword:000000E7

Have been searching google, found several site, forums talking over that
remaining bit but tried all suggested means and never succeed to get rid of.
I am joining this news group in the hope to find somebody which might
have the magic.
Thanks in advance

Hello, Sorry I forgot the name but do remember that it is a DLL that creates
the registry entry. I found a poster that had the same problem and found the
offending DLL. The poster listed the name and DLL removal procedure. First
try Teknum Systems, I think at one time they provided the removal procedure.
Sorry that I could not be of more assistance.
take care.
beamish.

Thanks for the message. There is effectively a removal tools. It remove
the dll and stop the update requested.
Have used it but the registry entry keep re-appearing on his own.

Hi

From my research it looks like this is a part of the HandyBits
Update Service

http://www.handybits.com/update_service.asp

The URL above have a download link to an utility that will disable the
service, but it will not remove it.

If you want to remove it, based on a post in a Web forum, you can use
this tool from HandyBits:
http://www.handybits.com/download/misc/hbCleanUp.exe

It might be that this utility will remove any Handy Bits software you
have installed as well (e.g. EasyCrypto Deluxe or File Shredder).

It looks like this service is started from the registry entry
"Update Service" here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
launching updsvc.exe or update.exe from the (hidden) folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Teknum Systems\

More here as well:

And from this Web forum thread:

This is what Teknum had to say...(I got this as I was about to log off
for the night)

Dear Customer,

HandyBits products does NOT contain spyware.
Our update service (see
http://www.handybits.com/update_service.asp for more
details) starts on system startup and checks our server (s1.teknum.com) for
product update information.

Update service is designed to be shared by multiply products, so it is not
removed automatically when you uninstall a specific program. If you don't
want to use any of HandyBits products and you want to remove update service,
you can simply delete the directory C:\Program Files\Common Files\Teknum
Systems. Please note that the location and name of <Program Files> folder
depends on Windows setup and user locale, and could be different on your
machine.

Please download and run this file (hbCleanUp.exe), this small program will
remove all tracks of HandyBits products from your PC.
http://www.handybits.com/download/misc/hbCleanUp.exe

Please, do not hesitate to take contact again if you will have any further
queries.

Best regards

Note that the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Teknum Systems\
is most likely flagged as Hidden...

Hello, Found the item. I will paste the way to remove from Windows98,98se and
ME.
Do not know how to remove a .dll from Windows XP.

:If you believe them, the "update service" CAN be suspended,
using
their own tool.

"The snide way in which it is otherwise established and maintained -
using a parasitic hook on the rightclick menu - SSMENU.DLL in
Windows\System does not inspire confidenc, though!

Manual disabling of this:
Instead of booting to DOS with a bootdisk, in a DOS window use this
command: regsvr32.exe /u ssmenu.dll then reboot and delete the file.
It is better to do it this way"
I remember after removing ssmenu.dll the problem was resolved. Do not know
what this company has created since I used one of their products. Found the
item using Google Groups (Teknum Systems) and reading until I came across the
above item.
