Team Foundation Workgroup Edition and Reporting Services

I read that when doing a dual server installation (application server and
Database Server), the Application Server needs to have Reporting Services
installed.

I already have RS2005 running on my Database Server (SQL2005).
I wan to install TFS but I DONT WANT TO INSTALL ANOTHER RS2005 on my
application server! I would have to pay for it's license!

Is there a way to install TFS on the application server with RS2005 running
on the Database server? If not, do I really have to purchase a SQL Server
license just to install RS2005 on the application server? Would be really
costly and useless.

Thanks.

I understand why you are in pain but this isn't the right place to ask that
question.

microsoft.public.vstudio.setup would be the first place I'd try to overcome
the technical problem (configuring TFS to use RS from the other server)

For the licensing question, you'd definitely have to contact Microsoft
directly. No one in the community can give you the assurance you need for
legal matters.

Hi Joe

As pointed out by Ben, this is not the right place for TFS questions. Since
we can't move thread in newsgroup, I will reply in this thread.

It is possible to use an existing Reporting Service instance when you
install TFS. You just need several extra configurations. Here are the steps:
1. If you have several instance of Reporting Service installed, please read
the article "How does TFS 2008 pick which Reporting Services instance to
use" at
http://blogs.msdn.com/jmanning/archive/2008/05/15/how-does-tfs-2008-pick-whi
ch-reporting-services-instance-to-use.aspx to make sure you know which
instance will be picked by TFS.
2. If the Reporting Service is not configured, please configure it.
3. Open the whole Msiproperty.ini in the TFS installation media.
4. Set the following 3 properties. I assume your reporting service web
service and Report Manager use the default 80 port and the computer name is
SERVER2.
VSTF_RS_SERVER=SERVER2
VSTF_RS_REPORTS_URI= http://SERVER2/Reports
VSTF_RS_REPORTSERVER_URI= http://SERVER2/ReportServer
5. Read the TFS installation guide to make sure the permissions for the
required accounts are configured properly. The installation guide can be
downloaded at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=ff12844f-398c-4fe9-
8b0d-9e84181d9923&displaylang=en.
6. Install TFS.

Let me know if you meet further issues when install TFS.
