TCP/IP failure after spyware removal

D

Duane Phillips

Hi all,

Subject line says it all. Computer can see intranet and internet before
spyware removal. No joy afterwards. No go on DHCP. No go on static IP.
Nada.

Happened on two machines: 1 XP Pro, 1 XP Home.

Both still load and can use programs, drives, etc... just not HTTP or file
shares or anything via TCP/IP.

Anyone else experience this? Solutions?

TIA.

I suggest LSP-Fix

Is this a real answer to my problem, or an attempt to give me more problems?
I apologize if I am mistaken about your suggestion... ?"cexx"?... but it
doesn't sound legit.

Ok -- Fair enough. Go to the web and research on Layered Service Providers (LSP) and find a
tool you feel comfortable with. When you do, you will find that spyware often has hooks
into WINSOCK and if not removed/repaired properly... well your experiencing the results.

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet
(some spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal
may damage your network), run LSP-Fix and / or WinsockXPFIx from
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

How exactly can you remove tcp/ip? There is no option (that I can find) to
remove tcp/ip via the Win XP interface. "Remove" is disabled in the
connection properties for ONLY tcp/ip. All others can be removed/added,
including ipx.

OK... found more info... according to a Microsoft web page:
"How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP"
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;299357&spid=1173&sid=1275

"In Microsoft Windows XP, the TCP/IP stack is considered a core component of
the operating system, and you cannot remove TCP/IP."

This page may prove useful. Among much blurbage is this:

"... with the NetShell utility, you can reset the TCP/IP stack..."

I could not find anything helpful @ support.microsoft.com while searching
"lsp" or TCP. I eventually found it via going to support.microsoft.com,
clicking in this order:
Windows XP
Network
Protocols
