Tasks disappear from the taskber

Hi

For some reason I can't see tasks on my taskbar. even
when I have a bunch of open windows I see an empty bar.
when I minimize the windows they simply disappear.

I can go back to the windows using the Alt+Tab keys but
otherwise I can't.

Can someone please help?
