GERALD MATHIAS

I have installed a ZoneAlarm firewall. Every time I boot up, it asks me if
I want to allow SVCHost to act as server.

I recently had problems with a phoney program of that name that was
apparently really a welch(?) worm. I downloaded a tool that claims to have
killed the worm, but I still don't know if there is any reason to allow SVC
Host to act as a server. (Except that I take the fact that I don't have a
network to serve as a clue and say "No").

But I wanted to check up on it, and ended up on a MS information page that
said I could find out what programs SVCHost was cooperating with by running
Tasklist /SVC from the CLI. Results: "Tasklist is not recognized as a
command"!

How come the people who write the info don't know what the commands are
supposed to be? (I checked my spelling carefully, and tried upper and
lower case; same result.

tasklist /svc worked fine for me. There's gotta be something wrong with your configuration.

GERALD;
I tried tasklist /svc copied and pasted. Did not work. I have XP Home.
Do you have Home or Pro? Maybe Stephen has Pro. I just looked up a KB
article, Tasklist /FI "PID eq processID", this is only available with Pro,
will not work with Home.
When ZA asks me if I want to allow SVC Host to act as a server, I say No.
But I do not check the remember box. So ZA will ask again. Every program
wants internet access even the Character Map.
Svchost.exe./ Generic Host Process for Win32 services. I usually have three
or four Svchost.exe's running at any one time.
Hope some of this helps. Let us know.

TASKLIST.EXE does not exist in XP Home. See www.dougknox.com, Win XP
Utilities, Startup Programs Tracker. This small utility scans your system
for startup programs and running processes. It also lists running Services.
It also allows you to create a log file that can be copied and pasted into a
newsgroup post. The contents of the program window are also copied to the
Windows Clipboard, automatically.

Yes, I have Pro.
