how do i remove a taskbar icon?

right click it and select delete? like most everything else in Windows

Systray? Right click > Exit or open the application in question and check
the Options for "Startup on boot" or "Show icon in tray".
Taskbar? Right click > Close.
Quicklaunch? Right click > Delete.
