Taskbar too high

This is a really trivial problem but it is driving me mad trying to fix it.

Somehow my task bar has become two rows high, instead of it usually one row.
I can now see the clock in all its glory, time day date the works!

I have tried to reduce the size of the bar by placing the curso at its top,
getting the double headed arrow and moving it down. Instead of reducing the
size by a row, it reduces the bar to zero height. I keep getting two ros or
none at all.

Any help in solving this prolem will be greatly appreciated before I lose
the balance of my mind.

Thanks

do you have extra icons on the taskbar? I have a couple of folders
worth of progs running from there and when my granddaughter was using
the computer she did something which cause the same problem, a double
height bar which I couldn't get to shrink. I ended up having to delete
the entries for those folders from the toolbars entries then redo
them, so each icon on the bar was fresh except the common ones. This
worked fine and the bar went back to normal size
