taskbar/start button disappears when closing explorer window

Weird one this... and its happened a few times on one machine.

Windows 2000 server with SP4.

Start menu and taskbar disappear leaving just a couple of windows open
on the screen. No way to get out of this apart from rebooting.

Any ideas ?
 
Don't know why it happens or how to fix it but instead of rebooting what
happens if you stop and restart Explorer.exe via the Task Manager?

Found out now that explorer.exe had actually died. Typing explorer.exe
in one of the open dos windows starts it up again.
