Taskbar items act like they are not there

Except for the items in the sys tray, all of the quick
start icons, as well as any open programs, when clicked
on simply do not respond. If right clicked, you get the
taskbar menu as though you clicked on an empty space on
the taskbar.

This symptom started after the last Windows update
performed just prior to the SP2 release.

Any ideas anyone, the Knowledge base didn't turn up
anything.
