Right-click the taskbar and select properties. At the
bottom, is 'hide inactive icons' ticked?

This feature is designed to save space by not displaying
those icons in the system tray that do not often change.
This can be disabled, or customised so that certain icons
are always or never displayed. Hidden icons can be shown
by clicking on the small chevron on the left edge of the
notification area.

You mean the grey one?... yep, but it doesn't make a
difference if I 'hide inactive icons' or not.....

Do you have that blasted little arrow to the left of them?

I agree with London that this is a problem. I see items in the list "PAST ITEMS" list which I just used a few minutes ago. I have no idea how they moved from CURRENT to PAST, and more importantly, I cannot figure out any way to move them back. Could this be a virus? Why does Windows only address putting the volume control in the notification area? Why can't I put (AND EXCLUDE) whatever I want in this area? Is there any way to really customize it?

thanks,
Michael

First, r-click in the Taskbar, Properties. Against Hide icons click
Customise and next to those in the list click to get the selector and
choose 'Always Show' (or of course 'Always hide' for some). Hide when
inactive seems to be temperamental
