taskbar buttons get hidden

I don't know much about why things like this happen. Recently, I brought up
my desktop and suddenly, I couldn't find the buttons of windows I'd
minimized. I found out I could brimg them back, so to speak, by opening task
mgr and switching to the window. It turns out those minimized windows were
all being hidden BEHIND the taskbar! Is there a way I can get them to appear
ON THE TASKBAR, again? My husband's desktop, separate from mine, and the
administrator's desktop both show the buttons as usual.
