taskbar and icons missing

Recently the desktop icons and taskbar have dissapeared.
When I boot the PC, the only way to get them back is to
press Ctrl+Alt+Del and run control.exe. As soon as
control panel comes up, all my icons re-appear as well as
my taskbar. I have Anti-Virus installed with current
definitions and have ran a full system scan without
finding a virus. I ran Ad-Aware to remove
spyware/parasites, and have attempted to restore to a
previous time. Nothing works except to run control.exe
after booting up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
