hello, I have been trying to install Norton Internet Security 2004 but have
been unable. I searched their knowledge and found that on common problem is
if task scheduler service is not started or not functioning, NIS cannot
install. I turned on task scheduler service and made the start up automatic.
This didn't help so I tried to make a schedule for calculator like theyt
suggested to test the scheduler. It didn't work. I think there is a problem
with the program. Is there anyway to repair it short of a complete windows
reinstall?

Do you absolutel HAVE to use Norton? If not, get something other than
Norton, which is not (my opinion) much good anyway.

I have no experience at all with NIS (nor do I want any), but Task Scheduler
won't work in WinXP unless you have established a password for the user account
in which the task is set to run.

Do yourself a favor and don't use NIS. There are good freeware
alternatives available. AVG anti-virus, Sygate, Zone Alarm or Kerio
free personal firewalls.

Jone Doe is right. A free AV program like Avast is far superior to Norton and
is less of a resource hog. Norton is going the way of the dinosaur. Ancient
History. Also things like Zone Alarm and Microsoft AntiSpyware add enough of
a complete security setup for most surfing needs. TTFN.

I completely agree with Jone Doe about Norton, but I'd ask a different
question first: Are you sure your computer is 100% virus and
malware-free? Trying to install an antivirus/security program onto an
already-infected pc usually doesn't work. If you aren't sure about
this, do a scan with TrendMicro's Sysclean first:

TrendMicro's Sysclean is an extensive antivirus tool which has the
advantage of not needing to be installed. It requires two parts - the
scanning engine and the virus pattern files. Delete all Temporary and
Temporary Internet Files before running the program.

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

The pattern files will be zipped - extract them with your unzipper (like
WinZip) or if you have XP, you can just open the folder. You need to
put the extracted files in the Sysclean folder you made. For a more
automated way to get Sysclean, use Dave Lipman's Sysclean_FE from
http://www.ik-cs.com/got-a-virus.htm .

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.
