Hi Peter;
I knew that you get screwed with OEM, but I find out all the time
how much you get screwed. Hmm....
No I am not familar with System Scheduler, but I looked at the link
you included.
[[For anyone used to using MSTask, AT or WinAT, System Scheduler is
an ideal and easy to use replacement, with more flexibility and
features.]]
If the System Scheduler Free Version works at all, I'd say it would
be worth downloading, installing and giving it a try. Hey it's
free. If it works and you want the extra features, you can always
get the System Scheduler Professional later.
Good luck!
Keep having fun!

Wes,
Based on various postings found in Google Groups, schtasks.exe is
not distributed w/ the OEM versions of Win XP. This might explain
why we were not able to find it on the Win XP CDs or in my case
anywhere on the C: drive including the i386 folder. Are you
familiar with the System Scheduler available from Splinterware
Software Solutions (
http://www.splinterware.com)? Looks like a
nice free alternative.
Peter
Peter;
Yeah, if you do not have a real XP CD, Dell probably installed an
i386 file. You use that for sfc instead of the CD.

Wes,
Thanks for "hanging" in there w/ me to try and resolve this
problem. I have a copy of the DLL in the C:\I386 folder which
Dell made available from the initial Win XP install. When I
tried to fire off the calculator with a Scheduled Task, nothing
happened. No msg in the scheduler log either. I will try the
sfc later this week and post the results here. The registry
settings for the Setup is already pointing to the C: drive, so
maybe it won't ask for the CD.
Peter
Peter;
1) Interesting. I can't find schtasks.exe or schtasks.ex_ on
either of my Home or Pro CDs.
The underscore _ denotes that this is a compressed file.
schtasks.exe is on my machine @ C:\WINDOWS\system32
It should be part of both Home and Pro. Hmm..............
2) I have an MS KB Article that says:
[[Dllname was loaded, but the DllRegisterServer or
DllUnregisterServer entry point was not found.
Dllname is not a .dll or .ocx file. For example, typing
regsvr32 wjview.exe generates this error message.]]
This does us no good at all.
I checked another source and it says [[schedsvc.dll
DLLSelfRegister: No]] That may have something to do with trying
to register it. ============
Try this:
Start | Run | Type: sfc /scannow |OK
Have your XP CD ready to stick in your CD drive
Reboot when done.
This offers some explanation for the command above.
scannow sfc (sfc.exe)
http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
===========
If that doesn't work, we can try to expand SCHEDSVC.DL_
from your XP CD.
==========
Just curious. Schedule Calculator to run in five
minutes, set for One time only, does it open??

Wes,
Two problems when trying to use your suggestions.
1) I did not find schtasks.exe on my PC anywhere - did a full
C: drive search.
2) When I tried to register schedsvc.dll, I got an error
message that stated "Schedsvc.dll was loaded, but the
DLLRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file can
not be registered.".
Does this message mean that the version of the task scheduler
on my PC is corrupt?
Peter
Peter;
See if this helps. You may be able to see if Schedule Tasks
is working. schtasks.exe = Schedule Tasks
Start | Run | Type: cmd | OK |
When Command Prompt opens |
Type: schtasks.exe /? | ENTER
Try some of the commands.
========
schedsvc.dll = Task Scheduler Engine
This command will try to register schedsvc.dll
Start | Run | Type:
regsvr32 schedsvc.dll
OK
There should be a popup message telling sucess or failure for
whatever reason.

Wes,
Thanks for your reply. I have tried using the Task Scheduler
when my account has a password and without and get the same
result. The McAfee tasks are scheduled by McAfee itself, but
the weekly scan never runs. Their support staff suggested
applying a password to the account, but that has not fixed
the problem. Is there any method to refresh the Task
Scheduler without reloading XP?
Peter
Peter;
I had XP Home SP1 with no password and Kelly's tweak worked
for me.
Task Scheduler Does Not Run Tasks When "Run As" User Account
Has No Password
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;311119#appliesto
AT Tasks Cannot Be Viewed Using the Task Scheduler Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;220149
Maybe you should try to schedule the McAfee tasks with
Mcafee itself and don't use Task Scheduler. Just a
thought.

Wes,
As I stated in my original posting, the tweak from Kelly's
site worked (to allow task scheduling without account
passwords) for a machine without SP1 but not one that has
the SP1 installed. At least that is my experience.
Any others?

I am running XP Home SP1 on a new Dell 4600. I have
McAfee VirusScan running on it. The scheduled virus
definition updates appear to be checked periodically by
McAfee using the Task Scheduler and that task runs fine.
When I try to setup a weekly virus scan using my account
and password, the task never runs. Likewise when I go
through the Add Task Wizard to add a disk cleanup task or
use the at command to manually add the cleanup task, they
never run. I have tried stopping and starting the
scheduler to no avail. The scheduler log shows no
entries for either the McAfee weekly scan or my Disk
Cleanup task only the automatic virus update check.
Ideally I would like to run my machine without a password
since I have an older Dell 4500 running XP Home (without
SP1) and it runs the Disk Cleanup just fine (no account
password). I have used Kelly's registry edit to disable
the "limitblankpassworduse" on both machines.
What is involved in getting the Scheduler to run on the
SP1 machine?
Thanks for any help,
Peter
