Is there a way to switch off the task pane at start up - unchecking the
checkbox in Tools>Options>View> Startup Task Pane does not have any effect.

Aless,
Is there not a little checkbox at the bottom of the startup task pane which
you can uncheck ?

This would be Word 2003? We've had many questions about this, but so far no
solution. I'm guessing it's a bug.

In Word 2002, in the New Document Task Pane, clear the checkbox entitled
"Show at startup" at the bottom of the task pane.
