Task pane has disappeared

I am having a problem with my task pane...it has disappeared from all of my
folders. Instead, there is now a bar with the task options below the
toolbars. I have tried to reset under folder options to no avail. I just
want my task panels back! please and thanks

Task pane...are you referring to the left hand portion of the screen? What
used to be called webview? If so, you go to the tools menu (in a folder) and
click on folder options and under the general tab, there is an option to show
common tasks in folders or use classic Windows folders. Choose Show common
tasks.

Hmm.. if OP says "I have tried to reset under folder options to no avail"
and "Instead, there is now a bar with the task options below the toolbars,"
doesn't this sound a bit like Vista? ("Windows Explorer's task panel
has been removed, integrating the relevant task options into the toolbar")

Does IE7 under XP install anything similar re Windows Explorer?
(I have delined the "IE7" update, so I lack the direct experience).

IE7 does not affect Windows explorer. Maybe it is VISTA the OP is talking
about!
