Task manager

When I open the task manager, and I view the processes
running, how do I know which ones are required by
windows? I find I have 38 running, some are multipuls,
such as SVCHOST.EXE, I would like to shut down some but
am not sure which ones I can stop safely??
At the same point, these processes start up when the pc
starts up, so are they associated with programs that
startup? If that is the case how can I disable them?
I have tried using "compmgmt.msc", "gpedit.msc"
and "wmimgmt.msc" with not much luck.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks

To stop programs from loading first check the programs options. Then if
needed, try msconfig, startup tab.
