does anyone know what tasks should be running in the
background when you have just booted up? is there a
default list for the xp tasks?

It very much depends on which programmes you are
running,so the simple answer is "not exactly".

If you type msconfig into the run box,you can determine
what is set to run on boot up.

Then,you can go to this site:

http://sysinfo.org/startupinfo.php

If you have any suspicions over a particular item.
