Task Manager strange behaviour in Windows XP

Task Manager (WinXP SP2) shows only the Processes information.
All tabs and menu are missing. The Task Manager can only be
closed down by right clicking on the green square icon in the
TaskBar and hitting close. Any ideas please ?

Try double-clicking on the non-window area of it.

Thanks - when I next get my hands on it I'll try your suggestion.
It's a brand new Dell laptop that the user had only used for
about a day before everything went pear-shaped.
