I have the blasterworm virus on my Windows XP and
according the the Symantec directions to end the worm
process I should be able to hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get to
my Task Manager, but when I do this, it pops up for a
second & goes away. What can I do to make it stay up? or
is there another way to bring it up?

My computer kept rebooting the first of the week & I
finally got everything cleaned up-but today when logging
on "winlogin.exe" not found came up. After reading the
directions again from symantec.com, I was supposed to go
under Task Manager to look for nstask32.exe or
winlogin.exe. But when I try to do Ctrl+Alt+Delete the
Task Manager Window pops up for a second and goes away.
It doesn't stay up long enough for me to click the
Processes tab on it. Is there another way? Help!

Yon,

To work around the virus, open a command prompt and enter the following
commands:

COPY C:\Windows\System32\Taskmgr.exe C:\Windows\System32\Taskmgr1.exe
COPY C:\Windows\Regedit.exe C:\Windows\Regedit.com
COPY C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSCONFIG.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSCONFIG1.EXE

Then use the new file names, MSCONFIG1.EXE, Taskmgr1.EXE and REGEDIT.COM to
run these utilities. Then see www.kellys-korner-xp.com, Line 257, Left
column for a small VB Script utility that will remove all currently known
variants of MSBlaster and a couple of the viruses (at least temporarily)
that can piggyback in with Blaster.
